Depression
Depression is when a person feels a range of moods intensely, without any apparent reason and for any given amount of time. It is classified as a mood disorder.
It can affect many teenagers, and it is concerning for them because there are many stresses like school, peer pressure, extra-curricular activities and more.
Symptoms for depression include:
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Appetite or weight changes
- Sleep changes
- Anger or irritability
- Loss of energy
- Self-loathing
- Reckless behavior
- Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
Statistics on depression in teenagers:
According to the National Co-morbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement, about 11 percent of adolescents have a depressive disorder by age 18, girls are more likely than boys to experience depression, although it is still common in boys, the risk for depression increases as a child gets older and major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability among Americans age 15 to 44.

Anxiety.
An anxiety disorder is a mental health disorder, it usually involves excessive worry and it can be present in a number of forms. It affects a person’s everyday life and can be very limiting to what they can and cannot do. It is categorized as an anxiety disorder.
It affects teenagers through school and extra-curricular activities. They may get anxious over relationships, friends, school work or keeping up to date with school and extra-curricular activities.
Symptoms of anxiety include:
- Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
- Problems sleeping
- Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- An inability to be still and calm
- Dry mouth
- Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

A large, national survey of adolescent mental health reported that about 8 percent of teens ages 13-18 have an anxiety disorder, with symptoms commonly emerging around age 6. However, of these teens, only 18 percent received mental health care.

Anxiety disorders are estimated to affect about one in every 10 young people aged 18-24 years and there is a higher prevalence among young females, 14%, compared to males, 8%. The most common anxiety disorders are social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Chronic Fatigue.
Chronic fatigue syndrome is the common name for a group of conditions characterized by persistent fatigue and other specific symptoms that last for a minimum of 3 months in adolescents. It is a mood disorder.
It very much affects teenagers because it restricts them from going about their daily life as they used to. They generally can’t keep up with their friends and can find this upsetting. It stops them from doing the things they love and makes them feel bad about themselves.
Symptoms can include:
- Fatigue
- Loss of memory or concentration
- Sore throat
- Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
- Unexplained muscle pain
- Pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness
Statistics of Chronic Fatigue:
It seems that about 2 to 4 in every 1000 people have CFS.
People aged 15 to 20 years, and people 33 to 45 years, are more statistically proven to get Chronic Fatigue but you can get it at other ages.
It is rare for anyone to get it if they are under 12 years old.

- Distorted body image
- Excessive dieting and exercising
- Abnormal food preoccupations, such as counting all calories or obsessively studying cookbooks
- Constipation
- Dry, sallow skin
- Dental decay
Statistics of Anorexia:
